Measuring | A poem for Big Tree Measure 2026

We measure heights and girth,

count regen trees,

assess soil pH,

study the mycorrhizal fungi.

Measure

      Record

             Check.  Correlate. Compare.

                     Repeat.

But how can we measure awe-inspiring views?

Who counts the smiles? The thank you’s?

Who monitors our brain waves and heart rate

when we spot something new,

        ask a curious question,

                 sink wearily,

                              but with satisfaction

                 into bed

         at the end of a measuring day?
